Weekly Expiry
The recurring weekly settlement date for an index's options contracts.
SEBI's rationalization of derivatives expiries requires each exchange to run only one weekly options expiry day across its own index products, rather than staggering a different weekday per index the way NSE and BSE both used to. NSE currently runs its weekly index options expiry on Tuesday; BSE (Sensex, Bankex) runs its on Thursday.
Exchanges have changed this weekday assignment more than once by circular, so treat the day named here as the current convention, not a permanent fact. The exchange's own contract notes for the series you're actually trading are the authoritative source in the moment.
Example: a holiday falling on the usual expiry day typically moves that week's expiry to the previous trading session rather than skipping it entirely. That detail matters most to anyone holding a position they expect to expire on a specific date.
Frequently asked
Which indices have weekly options?
Under SEBI's expiry rules each exchange lists weekly options on one benchmark index: NIFTY 50 on NSE and Sensex on BSE. Bank Nifty, FinNifty, Midcap Nifty and Bankex trade monthly contracts only. Each index's DeltaK page shows its current expiry day and next four expiries, read from the exchange's contract list.
What is the difference between a weekly and a monthly expiry?
Both are the same kind of contract with a different lifetime. A weekly contract settles on the exchange's expiry weekday each week, and a monthly contract on the last such weekday of the month. A weekly option has less time left, so its time value decays faster in its final days.
What happens if expiry day is a market holiday?
The expiry moves to the previous trading session rather than being skipped or pushed forward. That matters most to anyone holding a position they expect to settle on a specific date: the contract expires a day early, not a day late.
