OI Buildup Matrix
The 2x2 reading of price direction against open-interest direction: long buildup, short buildup, short covering, long unwinding.
Price up with OI up is a long buildup: fresh, confident buying. Price down with OI up is a short buildup, fresh selling. Price up with OI down is short covering, shorts closing out rather than new conviction. Price down with OI down is long unwinding, longs closing out rather than new selling pressure.
The distinction matters because price direction alone can't tell buildup from unwind. A rally on short covering tends to fade once the covering is done, while a rally on real long buildup has fresh capital behind it. DeltaK's COA Matrix runs this same logic per-strike, in real time, across two OI generations rather than one end-of-day snapshot.
Example: NIFTY rallying 100 points while call OI at the strike just above spot rises sharply reads as long buildup, with fresh conviction behind the move. The same 100-point rally with call OI at that strike falling instead reads as short covering: shorts running for the exit, a rally that often stalls the moment the covering is done.
Long Buildup
Fresh, confident buying — new longs entering, not shorts closing out.
Short Buildup
Fresh, confident selling — new shorts entering, conviction behind the move down.
Short Covering
Shorts closing out into strength — not new buying conviction, and often fades once covering is done.
Long Unwinding
Longs closing out into weakness — not new selling pressure, just exposure coming off.
